A obra é caracterizada como romance de tese, nela Bernardo Guimarães analisa e critica a imposição da vocação religiosa e o autoritarismo familiar. Tem uma função moralizadora que denuncia os aspectos negativos da sociedade e induz os leitores a refutar os padrões estabelecidos. Um fato interessante é que em 1971, houve uma campanha de difamação e crítica da religião, conhecida como "Questão Religiosa" que ocorreu após um padre ser suspenso da ordem por ser Maçon. O fato ocorrido um ano antes do lançamento do livro, tomou grandes proporções entre o meio acadêmico e artístico e influêncio o autor. O Romance é ambientado no interior de Minas Gerais, e o filme retrata com fidelidade as belezas deste estado tão rico em histórias, e o drama vivido pelo jovem apaixonado querendo seguir seu coração.
