Solaris é um planeta distante, que vem sendo constantemente estudado há décadas, e cujo mistério sobre seu oceano ainda não foi esclarecido, nem seus efeitos. Por falta de interesse e resultados, a solarística está morrendo; aliado a isto, os membros na estação espacial que orbita o planeta estão sendo afetados pelo oceano. Por conta disto, o psicólogo Kelvin - conhecido de um dos doutores da solarística e amigo de um dos tripulantes - é mandado para a estação para averiguar a situação. Lá, ele percebe aos poucos que Solaris é, mais que um planeta, um espelho da alma.
