Humphrey Bogart interpreta uma das suas raras comédias, nesta bem disposta aventura sobre três condenados - Joseph (Bogart), Albert (Aldo Ray) e Jules (Peter Ustinov) - que estão planejando a sua fuga da Ilha do Diabo. O destino intervêm quando eles se escondem em casa do simpático, mas inepto Felix Ducotel (Leo G. Carroll) e da sua família. Felix é o responsável da loja do seu exigente e arrogante primo André (Basil Rathbone), que decide cometer o erro fatal de roubar o adorado animal de estimação de Albert, uma cobra venenosa! Para os Ducotel, vai ser um Natal para recordar - partilhado com um trio de patifes que acabam por ser também três 'espertalhões'.
