O educado texano criador de gado Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) agora vive no México e tem pouco interesse na Guerra Civil, exceto para ganhar algum dinheiro. Mas depois de uma longa viagem para entregar gado para a União, ele é sequestrado pelo coronel confederado Tom Rossiter (Richard Widmark). Com as tropas e os civis famintos e cercados em Richmond pelo exército da União, o coronel pretende, de uma forma ou de outra, convencer Kelly a ajudar a roubar o rebanho e levá-lo para a cidade. O dinheiro confederado não tem nenhum valor, de modo que o Coronel recorre a outros meios, com resultados inesperados.
