Na esteira do assassinato do presidente Abraham Lincoln, sete homens e uma mulher, Mary Surrat foram presos e acusados de conspiração para matar o presidente, o vice e o secretário de Estado. Surrat, de 42 anos, era proprietária do local onde John Wilkes Booth e outros se encontravam para planejar os ataques simultâneos. Herói da Guerra Civil e advogado recém fomado, Frederick Aiken decide defender a muilher diante do tribunal militar e ao decorrer do julgamento começa a perceber que sua cliente pode ser inocente das acusações, sendo usada somente para atrair o verdadeiro culpado, seu próprio filho.
