Sara Guralnick (Zuzanna Surowy) é uma judia polonesa de 13 anos de idade, que teve sua família assassinada por nazistas em setembro de 1942. Após fugir para o interior da Ucrânia, Sara usa a identidade de sua melhor amiga para se refugiar em uma vila, onde é acolhida por um casal de fazendeiros.
