Ophelia é uma jovem de 20 anos que vive com a mãe e cresceu sem pai. Ela desconfia que ele seja Tedesco, um artista plástico alemão que acaba de retornar ao Brasil. Decidida a encontrá-lo, ela envia uma carta avisando de sua chegada e que irá até ele nadando, a partir da ponte de Santos. Ao saber da chegada iminente, Tedesco pede a Smutter, seu grande amigo, que passe a acompanhá-la de perto.
