Baseado em uma história verdadeira e comovente, os pais devotos de uma adolescente mórmon a mandam para um campo de conversão rigoroso e abusivo depois que ela se torna gay. Presa por oito meses com estranhos, Alex enfrentou castigos horríveis e espancamentos destinados a curar sua homossexualidade. Depois de perceber que ela teria que se submeter às regras deles para sobreviver, Alex acabou sendo autorizado a frequentar a escola, onde se tornou amiga de um garoto que era o presidente da aliança gay-hétero. Ele ajudou Alex a entrar em contato com um advogado, que mais tarde ajudou a orquestrar sua fuga.
