Cinco séculos atrás, um mural foi criado em uma igreja do interior no norte da Inglaterra e, em seguida, escondido sob camadas de tinta branca. Olhando para ele novamente vai ser uma distração, o Rev. Sr. Keach diz ao veterano da I Guerra Mundial, Tom Birken, que vai passar um mês no campo restaurando o mural. Outro veterano, James Moon, está procurando o túmulo de um ancestral da padroeira da igreja que lutou nas Cruzadas. A esposa do reitor, Alice, vem para ver o mural e depois visita a torre do sino na casa de Birken, trazendo uma cesta de maçãs. Será que ela abrirá o livro no qual ele tem guardado a rosa amarela que ela deu a ele mais cedo?
