O garoto Jimmy (Jack Wild) possui um instrumento falante, na verdade uma Flauta Mágica, chamada Freddie. Durante um passeio de barco em alto mar o menino acaba adormecendo e chega a um lugar maravilhoso chamado Ilha Viva. Lá encontra um mundo onde quase tudo está vivo e se comunica, como as árvores, flores, livros, velas, maçanetas e tudo mais. Recepcionados pelo prefeito H. R. Pufnstuf, eles recebem todas as honras, mas tudo que os dois querem é voltar para a casa.
