Ernesto é um pintor reconhecido, ilustrador de histórias infantis, separado de sua esposa Irene, pai do pequeno Leonardo que ele está profundamente ligado. Ele aprende a partir da misteriosa Don Pugni, Secretário do igualmente enigmático Cardinal Piumini que a Igreja quer para santificar sua mãe. Ernesto fica chocado com esta notícia, não só porque ele percebe que tem sido mantido no escuro sobre sua família, mas também porque este evento está em completa oposição a sua vida artística, de Freeman e ateu. Dentro de algumas horas, as pressões e os passos que ele participa do processo de beatificação se intensifica. Conflitos explodir. A memória de sua mãe e seu sorriso induz uma confusão que vai empurrá-lo a reconsiderar seu passado e viver o presente de forma diferente.
