Salvador, Bahia, janeiro de 1835. Após mais de uma década de árduo trabalho, Guilhermina, 27, uma escrava de origem muçulmana, finalmente consegue recursos para comprar sua alforria, bem como a de Teresa, 11, sua filha adolescente. Mas, contrariando uma antiga promessa, seu “senhor”, o fazendeiro Souza Velho, se recusa a vender a carta da menina. Quando Pacífico Licutan, a mais estimada liderança islâmica de Salvador, é preso pelas autoridades baianas, a comunidade muçulmana entra em estado de ebulição e começa a articular uma jihad. Em desespero, Guilhermina enxerga no levante a única forma de conquistar a liberdade da filha.
