Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) é um homem tímido e introvertido, que vive na garagem de seu irmão mais velho, Gus (Paul Schneider), e sua cunhada Karin (Emily Mortimer). Lars apenas acompanha o desenrolar de sua vida, sem se mexer para algo. Até que um dia ele encontra Bianca, uma missionária religiosa, através da internet. O problema é que para as pessoas Bianca não é alguém real, mas a réplica de uma mulher, feita de silicone. Só que Lars acredita piamente que ela é um ser humano, o que faz com que se torne seu apoio emocional. Preocupados, Gus e Karin decidem procurar o conselho de uma psicóloga, que recomenda que concordem com Lars enquanto ele lida com seus problemas pessoais.
