Simone Segre, uma renomada cirurgiã de origem judaica, mora em uma cidade no nordeste da Itália. Uma vida tranquila, um apartamento elegante e sem conexão com seu passado. Um dia, ele se viu ajudando um homem vítima de um acidente de atropelamento. Mas quando ele descobre uma tatuagem nazista em seu peito, Simone o abandona ao seu destino. Cheio de culpa, ele acaba traçando a família do homem: Marica, a filha mais velha; Marcello, um adolescente atormentado pelo ódio racial; e o pequeno Paolo. Chegará a noite em que Marica baterá na porta de Simone e, sem saber, pedirá vingança.
