Numa cidade do interior, uma moça rica, Patrícia, desmancha mais um noivado, temendo novo golpe do baú. Sua empregada, Ernestina, resolve acompanhá-la ao Rio de Janeiro para "curá-la" de seus temores. No Rio, Floriano, o motorista particular da família Tancredo, é um virtual caça-dotes. Como os patrões estão de partida para a Europa, Xavier fica encarregado dos negócios da família. Ernestina e Patrícia hospedam-se no Hotel Plaza, onde a empregada passa por uma rica interiorana e Patrícia, sua secretária. Floriano e o jardineiro Gonçalves, na ausência dos patrões, passam por grã-finos na noite carioca, enquanto dois meliantes, Miguel e Tomás tramam um assalto contra a mansão dos Tancredo...
