O filho de um importante fazendeiro, recém formado e recém chegado da capital, é encontrado morto a tiros junto a um penhasco. A morte é atribuída a um famigerado bandido que vive foragido na região, e a quem a própria polícia teme capturar. A tranquilidade do lugar é abalada quando corre a notícia de que o tal bandido se aproxima da vila. Todos tratam de fugir, com exceção do vigário que, após parlamentar com o bandido, deixa-se convencer de que, pelo menos com relação àquele crime, ele é inocente. Assim, resolve dar-lhe refúgio na própria igreja para evitar o linchamento e investigar quem é o verdadeiro assassino.
