Rio de Janeiro, fins do século XIX. A jovem senhora Rita vai à missa do galo com seu pai Abel, deixando seu bebê aos cuidados da ama Madalena. Chega Pacífico, amante de Madalena, e esta deixa-o tomando conta da criança enquanto vai dar uma espiada na festa. A criança chora e Pacífico veste-se de mulher para que ela o tome pela babá. Nesse momento, chega Manoel Igreja e, confundindo-o com Madalena, tenta seduzi-lo. Abel e Rita retornam e a confusão aumenta. Manoel esconde-se e Pacífico, ainda vestido de mulher, recolhe-se à cama de Madalena...
