Hans Staden (Carlos Evelyn) um imigrante alemão que naufragou no litoral de Santa Catarina. Dois anos depois, chegou a São Vicente, concentração da colônia portuguesa no Brasil, onde trabalhou por mais dois anos, visando juntar dinheiro para retornar Europa. Neste tempo em que viveu em São Vicente, Staden passou a ter um escravo da tribo Carijó, que o ajudava. Preocupado com seu sumiço repentino após ter ido pescar, Staden parte em sua procura, sendo encontrado por sete índios Tupinambás, inimigos dos portugueses, que o prendem no intuito de matá-lo e devorá-lo. A partir de então ele precisa encontrar uma forma de convencer os índios a não devorá-lo e assim permanecer vivo.
