Fala sobre o gênero mais recorrente em sua obra – o ensaio –, que, em seu depoimento, “reúne a vocação literária que muito modesta existe em mim com a inclinação pela vida pública”. Arinos revela que a lei anti-racismo que celebrizou seu nome foi inspirada em seu motorista, depois de este ser impedido de entrar em uma confeitaria no Rio.
