Dois irmãos, Ricardo e Roberto, filhos de pessoas ricas, odeiam a sociedade de consumo e decidem ir para uma cidade do interior e viver entre os pobres. Tornam-se venerados por uns e rejeitados por outros. O padre tenta afastá-los de modo a pacificar a cidade. Repentinamente desequilibrado, Ricardo deixa-se levar como louco para o hospício, sendo acompanhado por Roberto. O exemplo dos dois, porém, fica na pessoa do menino Pedrinho, que resolve viver fazendo caridade. Baseado no famoso romance de José Mauro de Vasconcellos, que adaptou seu próprio livro para o cinema.
