Uma pedra rúnica nórdica é descoberta no oeste da Pensilvânia. A profecia sobre ela fala do grande lobo nórdico Fenrir (Fenris), e que sua liberação da pedra trará o Ragnarok - o fim do mundo. O arqueólogo Sam Stewart e sua esposa Marla descobrem que tem alguma ligação com seu amigo Martin. Um menino chamado Jacob é assombrado por terríveis pesadelos do que está por vir, e sua família explica esses sonhos através de histórias da lenda nórdica, que diz que o único que pode destruir Fenrir é Tyr, o deus nórdico da guerra, que é profetizado para voltar a lutar contra a criatura.
