Dr. Peter Carey é patologista em um hospital de Boston. A filha do chefe da equipe do hospital morre após um aborto ilegal dar errado, e o amigo e colega de Carey, Dr. David Tao, é acusado de praticar o aborto. Carey não acredita nisso, então vai mais fundo, irritando o pai da garota no processo. Abundam as perguntas: Quem fez o aborto? A garota estava realmente grávida? E o que isso tem a ver com morfina roubada, tentativas de chantagem e um massagista misterioso e perigoso.
