Há 250 anos, Soetsu, um humilde agiota, é assassinado por Shinzaemon, um samurai cruel, e seu corpo é depositado no Rio Kasangafuchi. Segundo a lenda, aqueles que afundam nesse rio jamais retornam à superfície. Vinte e cinco anos depois, por forças do destino, Shinkichi, o filho de Shinzaemon, encontra Toyoshiga, a filha de Soetsu e eles se apaixonam. Mas quando ela morre de uma doença misteriosa, Shinkichi descobre que não pode fugir do amor de Toyoshiga e é forçado a enfrentar a maldição do rio Kasanegafuchi
