São Paulo S/A se passa no momento da euforia desenvolvimentista provocada pela instalação das indústrias estrangeiras no Brasil no final dos anos 50. O filme conta a história de Carlos, que segue a trajetória da maioria dos jovens de certa camada da classe média paulistana. Guiando-se pelas oportunidades imediatas que a sociedade oferece, ingressa numa grande empresa. Logo depois, aceita um cargo numa fábrica de autopeças, da qual torna-se gerente. A certa altura, encontra-se na pele de um chefe de família, que trabalha muito, ganha bem, mas vive insatisfeito. Sem um projeto pessoal de vida ou perspectivas de se opor à condição que rejeita, só lhe resta fugir.
