Quando Bartok permanece em silêncio, os nazistas o prendem e o deixam vegetar sem contato ou distração. Quando Bartok está à beira de ser mentalmente quebrado, se depara com um livro em que os movimentos das partidas de xadrez foram registrados em um ardil. Por falta de alternativas, ele internaliza esses jogos. Anos depois, quando ele conhece o atual campeão mundial de xadrez em um navio, a insanidade da prisão toma conta.
