A mãe de Augusten é uma iludida aspirante a poeta portadora de disfunção bipolar cujo casamento com o pai do menino está em ruínas. Logo, ela passa a ver um excêntrico terapeuta chamado Dr. Finch, enquanto Augusten é deixado aos cuidados da família esquisita de Finch, incluindo sua sádica filha. Abandonado por seus pais e adotado pela família Finch, ele se identifica com filha mais nova Natalie e apoia a mulher sofrida de Finch Agnes. Constantemente relatando os eventos de sua vida em um diário como uma forma de terapia, Augusten se vê em situações como evitar a escola, aprender sobre o amor com um homem mais velho e tomar grandes decisões aos 15 anos de idade.
