Pedro Malazartes (Mazzaropi), ao chegar em sua casa na fazenda, recebe a notícia de que seu pai havia falecido. Caipira humilde e inocente, Pedro é enganado pelos irmãos na partilha da herança. Um deles toma posse de todo o gado e dinheiro, enquanto que o outro fica com a fazenda. Sem nada do que reclamar, Pedro deixa a fazenda levando somente um ganso, um tacho velho e umas poucas roupas. Pelo caminho, acaba sendo acompanhado por uma porção de crianças abandonadas. Atrapalhado e de coração mole, começa a aplicar pequenos golpes para conseguir dinheiro.
