1946. O veterano de guerra americano Ivan Bibic (John Savage), que foi um prisioneiro de guerra, sofreu uma crise nervosa que só lhe permitia morrer ou sonhar. Assim, ao retornar para a sua pequena cidade natal, Brownsville, na Pensilvânia, ele só pensa em encontrar seu sonho: uma refugiada iugoslava, Maria Bosic (Nastassja Kinski), uma amiga de infância que se tornou uma bela mulher. Ele sempre sonhou ter com Maria o casamento perfeito, embora ela seja desejada por outros homens. Em certo ponto Ivan diz que sonhou tanto com Maria que ela vive em seus sonhos, não no seu corpo, e é verdade, pois os sonhos dele não são iguais à realidade. Maria e Ivan se casam, mas ele descobre que não consegue fazer amor com ela.
