Gabriel passou quatro décadas gerenciando o Papagaio Azul, uma casa noturna parisiense onde se apresentava como drag queen e onde seu amigo Nicky se apresentava como mágico. Após sua morte, seus afilhados vêm a Paris para cuidar dos detalhes do funeral: Nino, um contador gay que traz seu jovem amante e Marianne, editora de uma conhecida revista feminina. Também estão Simone, ex-mulher de Nicky e mãe de Marianne, e Alice (Catherine Deneuve), outra ex-mulher de Nicky e mãe de Nino. Quando o testamento é lido, para surpresa de todos, a propriedade do cabaré é dada a Nino e Marianne, que não têm o menor interesse de gerenciar uma casa noturna e anunciam que pretendem colocar o local à venda. Nicky deseja manter o Papagaio Azul aberto, mas não possui recursos para comprá-lo, apesar do fantasma de Gabriel visitá-lo frequentemente pedindo que encontre uma solução de impedir que a casa feche.
