Uma voz trêmula pede ao roteirista, Joel Brandt, que pegue o telefone em uma mensagem de sua secretária eletrônica. Pensando em uma brincadeira, Joel apaga a mensagem. O chamador é encontrado morto. Outro interlocutor deixa uma mensagem para Joel; há outro assassinato ... depois outro ... depois outro. O assassino tem a atenção de Joel e Joel tem a atenção da polícia. Agora o principal suspeito de uma série de assassinatos, Joel descobre que esse assassino psicótico o alvejou por uma razão encontrada em seu corpo de trabalho. Joel será capaz de reescrever seu final ou ser forçado a pagar o preço final?
