Embora a Batalha da Inglaterra tenha sido relativamente curta - 20 semanas - para os pilotos parecia não ter fim, a simples luta pela sobrevivência impelia os dois lados. A Batalha da Inglaterra não terminou simplesmente, cessou depois que o outono forçou Hitler a abandonar a operação Seelöwe (Leão Marinho), seu plano de invasão ao Reino Unido. Somente quando o inverno se aproximou, os ingleses se deram conta de que haviam sobrevivido à batalha. Com a queda da Noruega, Dinamarca e França, em junho de 1940, a Luftwaffe ganhou importantes bases aéreas para se lançar no maior combate aéreo da história. A vitória parecia possível partindo da costa francesa pelo Canal da Mancha. As forças aéreas alemãs tornaram-se invencíveis desde a conquista da Polônia e da França; além disso, tinham o avião Messerschmitt Bf 109E, um dos mais formidáveis caças do mundo, tinham ótimos pilotos, comandados por ases da I Guerra Mundial.
