Cris (Charles Sheen) é um estudante universitário patriota que abandona os estudos para se alistar na Guerra no Vietnã. Mas quando chega no front da guerra do Sudoeste Asiático, o mesmo se defronta com a dura realidade de uma guerra onde os prováveis "hérois" tem o seu caráter deformado e onde a forma para fugir desse inferno é a maconha e a heroína. O Sargento Elias (William Defoe) e o Sargento Barnes (Tom Barenge) serão os oficiais que marcarão a sua vida para sempre. Filme que consagrou o diretor Oliver Stone, onde ele mostra a realidade nua e crua da Guerra do Vietnã, trazendo uma visão mais realista do que a do filme "Boinas Verdes" (1969), estrelado por John Wayne.
