Lélia foi pioneira ao denunciar, publicamente, a situação da mulher negra na sociedade brasileira. Na década de 1980, com a publicação de um artigo no livro O lugar da mulher, propôs uma reinterpretação da figura da Mãe Preta. Com novas perspectivas de análise, buscou em sua atuação reinterpretar e reconstruir a história do Brasil sob a ótica da mulher negra. No movimento feminista, sua contribuição foi a introdução da questão racial nas suas agendas políticas. Até então, as especificidades das mulheres negras não eram contempladas. No entanto, a importante trajetória desta mineira de alma carioca é desconhecida por grande parcela da população brasileira. Desde o seu falecimento, no ano de 1994, estudiosos e militantes têm batalhado para resgatar sua memória e organizar seu pensamento.
