Quando o comandante da tripulação de um bombardeiro B-17, Fortaleza Voadora, é morto em ação em um ataque a Sicília em 1943, o seu substituto, um jovem e ingênuo piloto luta para ser aceito. Designados para uma missão suicida, a única chance de sobrevivência do grupo é unirem-se como irmãos na batalha. Com ação aérea sem precedentes, efeitos de tirar o fôlego, o filme é uma homenagem aos sacrifícios de toda uma geração durante a guerra mais importante da história.
