Em uma pequena cidade do New Hampshire, Will Reed (Treat Williams) cria o filho Seth (Jonathan Jackson) sozinho, desde a morte de sua mulher. Mas agora Seth se tornou um adolescente, que bebe e usa drogas. A família de sua namorada, Robin (Schuyler Fisk), não está nada feliz com a situação. Como se não bastasse isso, Seth também se empenha em fazer charme para Tina Conway (Linda Hamilton), que está envolvida com Will. Repentinamente Seth começa a presentear Will com misteriosas peças de roupas, que parecem estar ligadas a mortes que vêm ocorrendo. Confuso, Will teme que Seth seja um serial killer, mas vai ter trabalho para convencer a polícia de que não está enlouquecendo. Revelações sobre seu passado talvez sejam a única maneira de descobrir o que afinal está acontecendo, mas também podem revelar que Will é paranoico, instável e que escondeu por anos mistérios sobre seu passado, especialmente sobre o incêndio que matou a esposa.
