Tem o encontro de Mildred (Ellen Burstyn) com Mark (Jay Mohr), seu filho que está morrendo de AIDS. Gracie (Madeleine Stowe), que trai o marido com Roger (Anthony Edwards), também casado. Há Meredith (Gillian Anderson), diretora de teatro que teme se envolver com Trent (Jon Stewart). Existe ainda Joan (Angelina Jolie), uma extrovertida jovem que se apaixona perdidamente por Keenan (Ryan Phillippe), ainda traumatizado pela perda trágica de sua última namorada.
