Capitão Roper (William Holden) é o guardião de um campo de prisioneiros gerenciado pela União. Uma misteriosa mulher chamada Carla Forester (Eleanor Parker) chega ao acampamento, a fim de libertar os prisioneiros confederados, e as coisas se complicam quando Carla e o capitão começam a se apaixonar.. Em um esforço para recapturar os fugitivos, Roper tem um encontro com um grupo de índios Mescalero. Para sobreviver, ele terá que se unir com seus prisioneiros e lutar contra os índios.
