Nesta interessante versão de uma história real da virada do século, Nicolas Cage interpreta Ned Hanlan, um delinqüente juvenil que se torna um remador internacional. Vendo em Hanlan uma chance de ganhar dinheiro fácil, Bill (David Naughton), um jogador, faz com que Hanlan seja treinado e começa a promovê-lo no circuito de corridas. Com o tempo, Hanlan se aperfeiçoa, e sua fama cresce. Mas o sucesso tem seu preço quando o atleta cai nas mãos de um empresário impiedoso (Christopher Plummer).
