Na mitologia Eslava, acredita-se que as Rusalki sejam os espíritos de jovens mulheres que morreram afogadas em rios ou lagos. Suas características são semelhantes as ninfas d'água, sereias e súcubos. Rusalki conta a história de Leon, um historiador, que viaja por cidades remotas a fim de finalizar sua tese sobre lugares históricos. Leon conhece Liz, uma viúva que tem dificuldades para enfrentar o recente desaparecimento de seu único filho. Liz permite que Leon passe algumas noites em sua casa. Porém, coisas incomuns começam a acontecer.
