Tendo abandonado a carreira de modelo para se dedicar à fotografia, a estadunidense Lee Miller aproveita a vida com os amigos boêmios na França quando a Segunda Guerra Mundial eclode. Ela se junta ao artista que ama em Londres e consegue trabalho na revista Vogue britânica documentando o front doméstico, mas não gosta da posição e ultrapassa obstáculos burocráticos para chegar na perigosa linha de frente. Na França, Miller une forças com o fotojornalista David E. Scherman e os dois documentam a devastação da Europa.
