Recentemente viúva, Rose Bianco (Sophia Loren) se sente indiretamente responsável pela morte de seu marido, Tony, um bandido que foi assassinado por membros de uma quadrilha rival. Ela sente-se assim pois queria comprar várias coisas e, como o marido não tinha dinheiro, enveredou para o crime. Para se sustentar e ao filho, Ralph (Jimmy Baird), Rose trabalha várias horas por dia fazendo flores artificiais. Um viúvo, Frank Valente (Anthony Quinn), sente-se atraído por ela e tenta convencê-la que a ama. Além disto há um outro problema: a filha dele, Mary (Ina Balin), está fazendo uma forte oposição para esta união.
