Após a invasão dos Aliados na Itália, a cidade de San Pietro, no vale do rio Liri, se torna um marco dos efeitos brutais do combate, tanto para soldados como civis. A cidade, localizada em uma colina, foi tomada pelo exército americano que tentava impedir o avanço dos alemães durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Só que os alemães estavam articulados e bem escondidos nas trincheiras, o que fez com que essa batalha ocasionasse uma baixa de mais de mil homens do exército americano. A equipe do diretor John Huston chegou após o fim do combate, mas a encenação da batalha impressiona por seu realismo.
