No dia do aniversário de 18 anos de India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska), seu pai sofre um acidente de carro e morre. A convivência desta garota tímida com a sua mãe (Nicole Kidman) torna-se ainda mais problemática, fato agravado pela visita dos parentes durante o funeral. Entre os familiares presentes, está o tio Charlie (Matthew Goode), um aventureiro que passou a vida inteira entre as cidades da Europa, sem dar sinal de vida. India nunca soube da existência desse homem, mas logo a sua presença traz à tona o sombrio passado da família Stoker.
