Em um retrocesso deliberado para 1940 filmes noir , um ex-detetive particular a partir desse período, Chandler, ocupa seu antigo trabalho de novo, e encontra-se constantemente dirigindo carros velhos. Ele é ostensivamente contratado pelo governo para proteger uma testemunha, Katherine Creighton, de um líder do submundo do crime, John Melchior, que quer matá-la. Mas Chandler é na verdade trabalhando para um agente do governo corrupto, Ross J. Carmady, que está usando-o como um joguete para que Carmady pode assassinar Melchior e colocar seu próprio agente duplo na parte superior da raquete.
