Após a estranha morte de seu antigo jardineiro, Ellen (Katharine Houghton), contrata o misterioso jardineiro Carl (Joe Dallesandro), que incrivelmente consegue transformar o seu jardim em algo além do que ela esperava. Sem perceber o novo jardineiro introduz plantas desconhecidas em seu terreno que emitem gases venenosos. Com o tempo o novo jardineiro demonstra que consegue se comunicar com as plantas e começa a influenciar os pensamentos de sua patroa, e alimentar as plantas com a carne das amigas de Ellen. Ellen começa a desconfiar que o jardineiro não seja tão humano como aparenta.
