Os Smith são uma família de 1903 que moram em Saint Louis, e formada majoritariamente por mulheres, que vivem diferentes momentos em suas vidas. Rose, a filha mais velha, aguarda ansiosa que seu pretendente Warren a peça em casamento. Esther, de 17 anos, está apaixonada pelo novo vizinho John, que a princípio não lhe dá muita atenção. Já a pequena Tootsie adora causar uma confusão. Quando o pai chega alegre com a notícia de que foi transferido para Nova York, ele choca a todos os membros da família, ligados cada um à sua forma, a Saint Louis. Isso vai desestabilizar suas vidas e provocar mudanças, principalmente em Esther que começou a namorar o vizinho John.
