Ruppertus escapa de queimar na fogueira, assume a identidade de Janus Suppertur, grande inquisidor do Papa e parte para encontrar Marie, por quem ainda é apaixonado. Enquanto isso, Marie e Michel se estabeleceram, tiveram uma filha, Trudi, e levam uma vida pacata. Isso, até que Michel é convocado pelo rei Sigismund para fazer parte da armada que se prepara para entrar em guerra com um povo inimigo. O exército do rei é liderado por Falco, um militar corrupto que foi subornado por Janus para assassinar Michel no campo de batalha. Falco cumpre seu plano e dá a notícia a Marie, junto de uma mensagem de Janus: ele se oferece para se casar com ela e assegurar um futuro bom para Trudi.
