O revelador de fotografias, Seymour "Sy" Parrish (Williams), é completamente apaixonado por sua profissão. Muito solitário, Sy é obcecado pela família de uma de suas clientes, Nina Yorkin (Connie Nielsen). Sy sempre revelou os filmes mais importantes dos Yorkin - o casamento, o nascimento do primeiro filho, os aniversários, a primeira aula na escola, as férias... Sy se considera parte da família e tenta, cada vez mais, aproximar-se dos Yorkin, até uma crise inesperada impulsioná-lo a ultrapassar os limites, colocando a vida de todos em perigo.
