Os presidiários Peter Van Hook (Alan Ladd) e John McBain (Ernest Borgnine) ficam amigos na prisão. Soltos quase ao mesmo tempo, eles planejam dar um grande golpe juntos. Decididos a passar a perna no dono de uma rica mina de ouro, eles propõem um trato que não pretendem cumprir: 100 mil dólares em dinheiro vivo em troca de 200 mil dólares em ouro.
