Hermila (Hermila Guedes) é uma jovem de 21 anos que está de volta à sua cidade-natal, a pequena Iguatu, localizada no interior do Ceará. Ela volta juntamente com seu filho, Mateuzinho, e aguarda para daqui a algumas semanas a chegada de Mateus, pai da criança, que ficou em São Paulo para acertar assuntos pendentes. Porém o tempo passa e Mateus simplesmente desaparece. Querendo deixar o lugar de qualquer forma, Hermila tem uma idéia inusitada: rifar seu próprio corpo para conseguir dinheiro suficiente para comprar passagens de ônibus para longe e iniciar nova vida.
